Recognise & understand

My horse is underweight

Being underweight can have various causes: a higher energy requirement, limited absorption of nutrients, a sparse ration or older age. A thin horse doesn't just have fewer fat reserves, it can also lose muscle mass.

We often reach for sugar-rich feed, but that isn't necessarily the solution. A stable, healthy weight comes from plenty of fibre and, in fact, little sugar and starch. With highly digestible energy and the right balance of vitamins, minerals and protein, your horse can gain weight healthily and keep it on.

Do you recognise this?
  • Ribs and vertebrae are clearly visible
  • Doesn't gain weight, even with a higher feeding rate
  • Moderate muscle development along the back
This is how you approach it

Get the basics right first, then top up.

Giving more of the same rarely works. First look at the quality and quantity of roughage, then at the energy and building blocks the ration is missing.
