Recognise & understand

My horse is a senior

As a horse gets older, its nutritional needs change. The teeth deteriorate, digesting nutrients can become less efficient, muscle mass is lost more easily and maintaining a healthy weight can become harder. Yet getting older doesn't mean a horse automatically has to lose condition or vitality.

The foundation remains enough quality roughage, high-quality protein and a balanced supply of vitamins and minerals. That way the older horse gets the nutrients it needs to support muscle, condition and overall health.

A senior horse doesn't always need more feed, but it does need feed that better matches the changing needs of an ageing body.

Do you recognise this?
  • Drops quids or eats more slowly
  • Loses weight or muscle mass while the ration stayed the same
  • Less fit or vital than before
This is how you approach it

Same needs, different form.

Keep an eye on dental checks and on the form in which you feed: roughage that's easier to eat and more feeding moments often help more than a bigger portion.
